Tour description
Take a journey back in time on this full day tour visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dougga. Its well-preserved monuments and its rich Numidian-Berber, Punic, ancient Roman and Byzantine history make it exceptional and a must see.
Depart for the scenic, approximately 130-minute drive to Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Tebersouk Mountains of Tunisia. It’s most prominent ruins are Roman, built during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, and include its remarkably intact Capitol building, a theatre and its Licinian Baths. Enjoy the views of the surrounding olive trees found in the area. The ruins are reckoned to be the best preserved example of an Africo-Roman town in North Africa. Marvel at the excellent state of conservation of most of the monuments as your guide brings the city to life. Some monuments such as the Capitole and Theatre have been “restored to their upright position”.
Following your tour, enjoy a Tunisian lunch in a local hotel. A set menu will introduce you to the rich cuisine of the area. After lunch, your tour continues with a visit to Testour. It is considered as one of the best examples of Andalusian architecture found anywhere in Tunisia. When Muslims and Jews were expelled from Spain in the early 17th century, North Africa was flooded with refugees leaving a mark on the area. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 90-minute drive back to the hotel. Time-permitting, a stop will be made at a local market
