Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! On this safari, you'll have the chance to visit some of the most breathtaking and unique locations in the world. From ancient oases and stunning sand dunes, to the fascinating culture and traditions of the Berber people who call the Sahara home, there's something for everyone on this amazing journey.
Your trip begins with a visit to the Berber-speaking community of Matmata, where you'll see the distinctive underground troglodyte structures that were used as a location for the film Star Wars. Some of the locals still call these structures home today, and you'll have the chance to learn more about their way of life.
Next, you'll head to Douz, the gateway to the Sahara. A trip through the dunes here is a must-do experience, and you'll have the option of a camel ride as well as an overnight stay under tents in the middle of the desert.
Then it's on to Chott El Jerid, the biggest salt lake in Tunisia and North Africa, where you can immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the oases. Finally, you'll visit Tozeur, a large oasis famous for its date exports. From here, you can explore the Chebika oases, Tamerza Waterfalls, and Ong Jemal, which was also used as a location for the Star Wars movie. Day 1: Exploring Matmata and the mighty Desert
We begin our journey by picking you up from your hotel and driving to Matmata, the site of several scenes from the "Star Wars" movie and the fascinating underground dwellings of the Berber Troglodytes. Upon arrival, we'll visit a typical local home and meet a Berber family. Afterwards, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at Sidi Driss Hotel in Matmata. Next, we'll drive to Douz, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. You'll have the opportunity to go on a camel ride (optional) before checking in at our desert camp. In the evening, we'll participate in a Berber bread-making demonstration followed by a typical dinner under tents. Overnight, we'll rest in the peaceful desert.
Day 3: Return to your Hotel / Departure day
After breakfast, we'll begin our journey back to Tunis (or another city of your choice) via Kairouan with 4 stops along the way to stretch our legs. Our adventure through Tunisia comes to an end as we arrive back in Tunis.
Day 2: The Oases of Tozeur
After breakfast, we'll depart for Tozeur via Chott Jerid, the largest salt lake in North Africa. Upon arrival, we'll visit the open-air museum, Eden Palm, where you'll learn about date production, meet the artisans, and sample some of the local dates. We'll then take a carriage ride through the biggest oases of Tozeur and enjoy lunch at the Eden Palm oases. Next, we'll drive by 4x4 to the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Ong Jemal, where the making of the Star Wars movie took place. We'll arrive and visit these stunning sites before returning to Tozeur. In the evening, we'll check into a 4-star hotel, have dinner, and spend the night in Tozeur.
